Petrel

  • Carpet Ride | 1991 to 2012 | A high ride by Anton Schwarzkopf, in the form of a huge bird of prey, swung up like the classic carpets to overturn the earth again

Schwarzkopf not only build roller coasters. In addition to carousels such as Twister or Monster, the company offered a belly-tingling steel colossus with the ride Djunk. In 1991, HANSA-PARK decided to invest in Schwarzkopf's Djunk and established the Adventure Land alongside the Flying Shark with the Petrel.

The heavy-duty gondola is mounted on two flywheels, which were connected diagonally to each other on one of the two steel towers. On one tower was the 130kW powered drive motor, which was covered with an elaborate ornament in the form of a bird's nest including a young bird. Likewise, the gondola was designed as a giant bird, decorated with wings and claws, and thus gave the attraction its name.

The highlight of the ride was the feeling of free fall. As soon as the gondola swung up to its highest point, it tipped slowly down into the depths and caused many butterflies in the passengers bellies. Like a bird in a dive, hunting for food, the gondola crashes again and again to rise in the air shortly thereafter.

To the chagrin of the guests the ride was a very sensitive system. Especially in 2005 and 2006, the Petrel had its moult. In addition to a defective engine, also broke two drive shafts. For several months, the bird was no longer operational. For this reason, the Petrel was dismantled for the 2013 season.
